Fish Then Coffee – Here’s Why

Today I slept until almost noon. I was up very late last night working on a new blog site. Ok, ok I was socializing on Messenger too and also researching unalome images on Google because at 51 I suddenly must have a tattoo.

Anyhow, I felt like crap this morning and instead of going for a coffee first thing, which I love to do, I made a salad and topped it with a can of sardines. Was the thought of a can of fish and lettuce really making my mouth water? Hell no, I really had to talk myself into it. I marched myself into the bathroom. Found myself in the mirror, “you got this.”

I made the salad. I took the photo for IG. I decided the salad was too big but I’d just have a few bites. Then it happened. The same thing that always happens when I make the switch from sugar/caffeine to whole foods for fuel. It is as if my brain function flips to “everything’s gonna be alright” mode. 

You know they say breakfast is the most important meal of the day? Yep, well yep it is. Before I go any further I’d like to say that I can feel you intermittent fasters rolling your eyes…I’m not saying pop outta bed at 7:00 and eat bacon and eggs. No, well that can be nice, but no, what I mean is make the first meal of the day a nutrient dense one.

Fact:

If you start your body off with caffeine/sugar at the beginning of the day you will crave sugar/carbs/caffeine for the rest of the day in attempt to balance out the highs and lows of your spiking and plummeting blood sugar. 

Fact:

People who eat a breakfast high in healthy fat and protein will have a more even energy, better mental focus, and more balanced blood sugar throughout the day.

Yes, this is true. Any school teacher will tell you that if little Johnny has waffles with chocolate syrup for breakfast he will be climbing the walls before first bell, agitated by noon, and he will find it challenging to focus at any time…Did I just describe you after coffee for breakfast and the office muffin you ate to remedy the head-bobs? lol

 Most Important Fact: 

If you drink coffee sweet, like I do, you will absolutely want something starchy to go with it and fish will not be doable. You will not be able to swallow it. Your brain will say, yuck, nada, not gonna f-ing happen. Humans are programmed to crave sugar as fuel for survival and once you have a little nothing else will appeal. Trust me on this. Fish first then coffee.

Yes, I did eat the whole salad and it was amazing.

Yes, I am drinking a coffee as I edit this post.
